SO.CA.TA Committees

To carry out SO.CA.TA's objectives, we have established eight working committees directed by a SO.CA.TA executive officer. These committees are charged with pursuing the above goals and objectives.

Currently, the active committees are:

Public Affairs Committee

Chair - Dana Gabbard

The Public Affairs Committee coordinates and guides SO.CA.TA's public advocacy via campaigns, media relations, coalition building and interactions with decision makers promoting our policy analysis. By 2002 the committee's goal is for SO.CA.TA to be more visible and a key actor in the regional opinion making process.

KEY PRINCIPALS: multi-modal, regional, watchdogs
KEY CONCERNS: parochialism/'fair share", "magic bullets" (mag lev, Curitiba busway, etc.), transit loaded down with solving other issues (equity, congestion, air pollution, etc.)

The above goals will be achieved by:

  1. identifying key issues - gather information and analyze - strategic choice of most important issues and those we can have a reasonable chance of effecting
  2. contacting reporters, build trust as a source of information and opinion
  3. networking/coalition building - work with CFN, STPP, environmental, business, labor groups, etc. to create mass movement
  4. preparing and present testimony at public hearings and appropriate venues
  5. writing letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, etc. - both on current events and long term ssues
  6. identifying key opinion leaders/stakeholders - build database
  7. PLAC column in newsletter/website - to educate officials, reporters, etc. on broader perspectives
