Goals and Objectives

Our goals are the following:
  1. Pursue and achieve results from our mission statement through advocacy, policy analysis, outreach and education.

  2. Maintain and raise funding levels for the organization in order to sustain itself.
In order to achieve our goals, the following objectives for the organization are outlined:
  1. Public Affairs Advocacy and Policy Analysis
Public affairs interface with the public, transit agencies and other government agencies in the pursuit of better public transit. Policy analysis on a planning issue or political, environmental or social issues related to public transportation will be executed focussing on southern California concerns, with particular emphasis to the Los Angeles County region and its adjacent regions.

The restructuring of transit services and other service improvements will be pursued as a forum with necessary actions such as activism, speakers at meetings, position papers and recommendations to government agencies and other concerned groups.

  2. Outreach and Education
Outreach and education will be provided to other community groups and the general public on the use and benefits of public transit. Involvement with the business community as well as environmental and social justice groups will be pursued.

Coalition-building among other community groups is vital to SOCATA's visibility as an organization that not only supports transit riders but non-riders and other civic members, seeking to make a livable community through better transportation options.

  3. Publications and Media Relations
SOCATA publishes The Transit Guide, which is the rider's manual for access to public transit in Southern California. Position papers, working papers and recommendations are frequently made and will be considered for publication for general or professional use and civic benefit promoting public transportation. Our newsletter, The Transit Advocate, is the platform in which transit advocacy is voiced. Policy analysis, activism and coalition building stems from here.

Our popular website is an educational tool and another forum for transit advocacy in the region. Many discussions and debates take place here on our website.

  4. Fundraising
SOCATA seeks to be fifty percent funded through the sale of key publications. It is also seeking to be funded through grants and research funding agreements.
