SO.CA.TA comments on proposed June 2009 Antelope Valley Transit Authority commuter service changes

Route 785 - We believe AVTA is in a "no-win" situation. Most of this line's riders appear to prefer the commuter bus service over Metrolink, even though the proposed realignment will essentially duplicate that service and the price of a monthly pass is comparable between the two services (indeed, until the end of last year, the pass prices were identical). We presume that these "elitist" riders prefer a "one seat ride" between the Antelope Valley and their work locations and they certainly will not accept a forced transfer at Union Station. We believe that the realignment will result in a significant drop in ridership, and AVTA may well have to soon consider canceling it in its entirety.

Route 786 - While we agree with the realignment of all trips via the 405 freeway, replacing non-productive service to the Hollywood area with a direct connection to UCLA, we disagree with the choice of Westwood & Santa Monica Blvds. as the south terminal. We suggest that service operate to Century City, where passengers will be able to connect with two Metro Rapid lines (704 and 728), four Metro Local lines (4, 18, 28 and 318), and two municipal lines (Santa Monica Line 5 and Culver City Line 3). Century City is therefore a more logical hub location than the proposed intersection, and could be serviced without a significant increase in trip running times.

Route 787 - We do not disagree with the discontinuation of service to Tarzana, but we strongly object to the elimination of direct service to California State University Northridge and Warner Center, the combination of which constitute the majority of the passenger destinations on this line. We strongly urge that CSUN continue to be directly served and that the south terminal be relocated to Warner Center Transit Hub, connecting with the Metro Orange Line, Rapid Line 750, four local lines (161, 164, 245 and 645), and LADOT's DASH circulator and express Line 422.
