Dana Gabbard's statement at 1999 Metro fare increase public hearing
As a transit dependent person I am acutely aware of the personal financial
impact this proposal would have. Yet the five years of activism I have
engaged in on regional transportation issues has given me a broader perspective
than perhaps I may have once brought to these issues. MTA has already made
significant strides toward improving its bus service under the leadership
of CEO Julian Burke. And if these proposals would provide monies to aid
that effort it seems only a fair share of the burden being borne by we
who use the service. Therefore I support MTA's proposal if and only if
its purpose will be to accelerate bus procurement and contribute toward
improvements in bus and rail service (shorter headways, later hours of
service). Possible use of these funds that I could support are implementation
of rapid bus and consent decree overcrowding relief.
