Dana Gabbard's written statement regarding Glendale Blvd. corridor proposals (1998)
Due to a schedule conflict I cannot attend the meeting on the Glendale Boulevard
corridor. But as a concerned resident of the central city I wish to make some comments
for the record. First, the 1994 study prepared under the auspices of the Metropolitan
Transportration Authority and Los Angeles Department of Transportation of Glendale
Boulevard did not address the concerns of the residents who live adjacent to it.
Issues relating to transportation were given seeming lower priority than ascertaining
the potential for development in the corridor. The clear consensus of residents is that
the stub of the Glendale Freeway be closed to end its spilling traffic onto the surface
streets. Yet this was rejected out of hand. The emphasis on increased capacity for
the street seemed predicated on the idea of turning Glendale Boulevard into a
miniature surface freeway to facilitate traffic thru the region. This is absolutely
what the residents are opposed to. Traffic mitigation seemed absent from the report,
as there were few options given for calming. In addition the neglect of public transit
issues was glaring. No explanation was given why a DASH circulator for the area could
not be provided for three of more years. I am unaware whether the in-progress Central/
East/Northeast restructuring study of public transit addresses the needs of the
Echo Park community.
In conclusion more public input is needed if this process is to result in
a viable proposal. The needs and concerns of the community must be addressed, not
ignored.
